December 23 – New Name Let’s meet again, for the first time. If you could introduce yourself to strangers by another name for just one day, what would it be and why?
Joy. When my mother was thinking up names for me ( my parents named us after we were born, so we spent some time nameless) it came down to two choices, Patricia Ann or Joy Patricia. Either way, she wanted to name me after her best friend from high school, Patti Ann. I kind of wish she had chosen Joy. Because instead of “rich and well-bred, ” my name would mean “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires,” or even “a source or cause of delight.”
Joy was my word for 2010, but while there were beyond doubt many joyous times, it has been a debilitating year. So I’m reclaiming this word as a subtext for 2011. 2011 will be the year of Restoration; Joy.
